A Rejection Slip for the Golden Age of Science Fiction

dedicated to Matt Haakenson, who might have liked it

When that old plot was new,
It was not hard to write,
And plots we now eschew
Great interest would invite.

When time machines were cool,
And pulps were still a dime;
When jackboots were the rule,
And Gernsback was sublime,

When bug-eyed monster fierce
Met girl in brass brassiere,
Her screams the air would pierce:
We all would know her fear.

This song, again, you've sung,
Of spaceship and its crew -
Ah, when Asimov was young,
And that old plot was new.
